About me
Dr. Janice Phelps was born to be an educator. She began her teaching career at age 5 during all family holiday gatherings. She would “play school” and young cousins would gather around for exciting lessons and engaging story time. With that extensive background and preparation Dr. Phelps went on to teach in Newark, New Jersey while completing her undergraduate degree in education at Seton Hall University. Upon graduation, she moved to Southern California to attend graduate school at Pepperdine University while teaching in South Central Los Angeles. Dr. Phelps completed two masters and a Ph.D in educational leadership and psychology. She made Los Angeles her home for 16 years and worked in the Los Angeles Unified School district as a teacher, title I coordinator, magnet coordinator, school site administrator and district level leader always advocating for children. Her heart led her to serve in South Central Los Angeles, Watts, Boyle Heights and downtown Los Angeles, She has taught undergraduate and graduate classes at Pepperdine University, Cal State Los Angeles, University of Northern Colorado Center for Urban Education and Regis University. She has a passion for new teacher development, working in juvenile court schools and educational leadership. Dr. Janice Phelps moved to Colorado and for the past 17 years she raised her family, taught at the university level and was a K-12 school director. In May of 2021 she made the decision to return back to Southern California and is currently serving as a Director III at the Los Angeles County Office of Education working with the juvenile camps and hall of Los Angeles County. Dr. Janice Phelps is a champion for our scholars, teachers, leaders, equity and social emotional learning!
