Building a Better Brother – Entrepreneurship & Social-Emotional Development for Justice Impacted Youth
Thursday May 8, 2025 10:10am - 11:10am PDT
The Building a Better Brother program is a transformative initiative designed to empower justice-impacted youth by equipping them with entrepreneurial skills and social-emotional development, fostering pathways for success beyond the justice system. By integrating entrepreneurship and SEL, this program not only supports rehabilitation and economic empowerment but also cultivates a mindset of resilience, leadership, and self-determination. This workshop will provide attendees with a proven framework for embedding these essential skills within juvenile facilities, demonstrating how strategic mentorship, hands-on business development, and emotional intelligence training can reframe scholars’ perspectives on their potential. Through this holistic approach, scholars are empowered to reclaim their narratives, develop a strong sense of agency, and position themselves as architects of their futures—effectively transforming challenges into opportunities for sustained personal and professional success.

Understanding Juvenile Justice Education Outcomes LIMITED
Thursday May 8, 2025 10:10am - 11:10am PDT
Despite policies aimed at supporting juvenile-justice involved students (JJIS), the lack of a uniform definition, and conflicting perspectives around JJIS privacy inhibits California's ability to evaluate the effects of existing policies and programs. Without a uniform definition California does not have a clear picture of JJIS. This means that California cannot identify these students in our longitudinal data systems or monitor their educational outcomes. This results in challenges around funding for these programs and supports for students when they are most vulnerable.

Special Event: Counted Out Film Screening
Thursday May 8, 2025 2:20pm - 4:20pm PDT
“Counted Out” investigates the biggest crises of our time. Political polarization. Racial biases. Social injustice. Economic inequity. Climate change. And a global pandemic. All viewed through a previously unseen lens: math.
In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we can access, the jobs we get is all underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand, or even notice. But whether we know it or not, our numeric literacy — whether we can speak the language of math — is a critical determinant of social and economic power. Through a mosaic of personal stories, expert interviews, and scenes of math transformation in action, “Counted Out” shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people?” Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society — and can help shape it? The film’s voices include the late civil rights icon Robert Moses as well as Talithia Williams, associate professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd University and TEDx speaker of “Own Your Body’s Data,” Julia Angwin, investigative journalist and founder of Proof, Steven Levitt, co-author of “Freakonomics.”
